Arts

Canterbury supports all of our student artists, from those just beginning to VI Formers preparing college portfolios. In the visual arts, Canterbury offers experience in a wide variety of media and advanced courses to broaden your talents. You may choose from courses that include Ceramics, Printmaking, Sculpture, Architectural Drawing, and Digital Photography. Getting involved with the arts at Canterbury presents you with many possibilities. It is the chance to create something, to bring an image to life on a canvas or a character to life on stage. It is also the chance to acquire something, to develop new skills and new tools for creative problem solving.

Advanced Placement courses in drawing and two- and three-dimensional design allow students to develop a portfolio and prepare for AP evaluation. The AP Studio Art program immerses advanced students in a year-long portfolio project and has been successful in placing graduates in leading art schools, including Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Cornell.

You can discover and pursue your individual talents and interests in the Performing Arts at Canterbury. Explore a new instrument or bring your expertise to the jazz ensemble or orchestra. Sing in the Canterbury Chorale as a novice alto or devoted soprano. Take on the role of a character as a member of the cast in a theater production. We offer more than 25 courses in the performing arts, giving you the chance to explore a wide range of artistic experiences. In the popular computer music courses, you will compose and record your original music using synthesizers and sequencing musical software. You may even arrange private instrument or voice lessons.

The drama program presents a Shakespeare play in the fall and a musical in the spring. You can participate on stage or behind the scenes as a stage manager, lighting technician, or costume assistant. Every English class reads the Shakespeare play presented in the fall, a unique experience that unites the School and gives students a thorough understanding of the playwright.

At Canterbury, you can take advantage of all that you need to make your arts experience great: a broad range of courses in visual art, music, and theater; passionate teachers who are practicing artists themselves; and beautiful facilities. We invite you to tour recording studio, individual music practice rooms, and The Edward J. Duffy Art Family Gallery.
