Every winter season, Canterbury looks forward to a hockey event that unites the School for a purpose more meaningful than any win, loss, or score. Hockey Fights Cancer is a charitable initiative founded by the National Hockey League and its Players’ Association to spread awareness, raise funds, and inspire hope for cancer patients and their families. In recent years, Canterbury has been a program partner, and this latest event only deepened this community’s commitment to helping others.

Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Hockey teams played “Hockey Fights Cancer” games on February 11 and 14 in a festively decorated O’Neill Arena. After a scoreless first period against Trinity-Pawling School, the boys scored four unanswered goals in the second, followed by three more in the third. In the end, the Saints earned a 7-1 victory. While the girls lost a close match against Westminster School, the game was still a success, proudly uniting the entire community in an important cause.

Both games featured successful bake sales and raffles to benefit Blood Cancer United and the American Cancer Society. Baked items were donated by students, faculty, and hockey players’ families, and raffle prizes from local New Milford businesses were organized by Allegra L. ‘27. Even members of the opposing team were happy to purchase sweet treats and raffle tickets to assist the School’s efforts. By the end of the week, Canterbury raised more than $1,500 for the cause.

“It's always a special day,” says Boys’ Coach Padraic “Paddy” McCarthy ‘94, P ‘29, “and the Saints delivered."

Once again, Hockey Fights Cancer proved that just as the Saints give their all on the ice, they are equally dedicated in their compassion, generosity, and unwavering support for those in need.
