Building A Community of Faith: Canterbury Celebrates New Sacristans at the Mass of the Holy Spirit

Twelve Sacristans, all wearing black cassocks and white surplices, stand at the altar of the Chapel of Our Lady with Father Brendan Horan, who stands in the middle of the group wearing red vestments.

September 13 was a rainy day on the hilltop, but inside the Chapel of Our Lady, spirits were bright at the Mass of the Holy Spirit. The first Mass of the new school year is a cherished tradition, offering the community a chance to connect through faith and celebrate the installation of Canterbury’s newest Sacristans.

Traditionally, a sacristan is responsible for the care and handling of sacred objects, but at Canterbury, the role has taken on an even deeper meaning. In addition to acting as altar servers during Mass, Sacristans help to lead Form Retreats and School Meeting prayers. They stand as examples of the School’s Five Values—Honesty, Respect, Compassion, Spirituality, and Self-reliance—and foster a community of faith at Canterbury.

"It was an honor to be a part of the interview process for this cohort of Sacristans," says Head of School Caroline Blatti. "I was truly moved by their commitment to leading lives of purpose in service of something greater than themselves. I was particularly inspired by their deep respect for the spiritual journeys of their fellow Saints and earnest desire to nurture a diverse community of faith at Canterbury. I can't wait to see all they will achieve together."

“We take on these responsibilities because we have discerned our own unique gifts and talents and wish to be of service to this community,” Joseph “Joey” Pieksza ’26 explained during School Meeting. “In doing so, we also commit to building a culture where everyone's gifts can be recognized and shared.”

As he formally initiated the 12 Sixth Form students, the School’s Chaplain, Rev. Brendan Horan, S.J., reflected on the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of God—and the ways each gift can help guide a Sacristan in this important role.
