For Our Saints, It’s All About Family

For Our Saints, It’s All About Family

Family Weekend is always one of the most anticipated and beloved events at Canterbury—and after our 2024 event, it is easy to see why!

The annual weekend of festivities and bonding brought more than 270 Saints family and friends together to enjoy the vibrant spirit of our hilltop community. There were plenty of smiles and hugs as parents joined their children in class, at meals, and all around the campus to get a firsthand taste of life at Canterbury.

Interim Head of School Sue Roberts P ’24, ’27 kicked off the weekend at the Welcome Ceremony with updates on the School and an upbeat message. “I am continually inspired by the dedication of the Canterbury community. The secret sauce, if you will, lies in the people here—the students, faculty, staff, and, of course, our families,” she said. “As I look back on the opening of school and the past two months, it is incredible to take inventory of all that we as a community have accomplished. And we are on schedule to return from Thanksgiving Break to a reimagined library, a centralized college counseling center, an expanded Donovan Center for Learning, and a Teaching Commons for faculty, better known as the Academic Hub. We are excited for this space to open, providing both our students and faculty the innovative spaces they deserve.”

After a day chock-full of activities—faculty conferences, a college meeting for Sixth Form and Postgraduate families, athletic events, program open houses—everyone gathered in the Steers Center Ragland Commons for the Family Weekend Concert Celebration. There, students in our Honors Contemporary Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Contemporary Band performed a mix of songs from artists like Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Santana, Prince, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars to the delight of their families and friends.

Throughout the weekend, visitors could also view a student art exhibit in the Edward J. Duffy Family Art Center and Gallery featuring ceramics, drawings, paintings, photography, and digital illustrations from our Saints artists.

The event was a big hit for Katherine and Gray Calvert P ’27, ’28, whose children, Logan ’27 and Samuel ’28, are both new students this fall. “This was our first Family Weekend at Canterbury, and we were eager to see everything in action and meet the faculty,” Katherine shared. “We were especially impressed by how their teachers talked about Logan and Sam not only as students but as members of the community. The magic of the experience is seeing how your children are finding their way and thriving. It filled us with pride.”

It was truly a memorable weekend for our Saints families!
