Head of School Reflections: Listening, Learning, and Looking Ahead Together

Dear Canterbury Community,

As our students and faculty prepare to depart for spring break next week and the final stretch of the academic year comes into view, I wanted to take a moment to share some early thoughts and reflections with you. The months since July have been full, energizing, and deeply meaningful, and this feels like the right moment to pause, look back, and look ahead together.

Since arriving, I have had the privilege of meeting with students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and trustees. These conversations have been thoughtful, candid, and generous, and they have reinforced just how deeply people care about Canterbury and its future.

From the beginning, my priority has been to listen carefully before setting direction. I have wanted to learn what makes Canterbury so special, to understand where we are strongest, and to ask where we see opportunities to grow. Guided by an approach rooted in asking forward-looking questions, I have sought to understand not only what makes Canterbury exceptional today, but also where our greatest opportunities lie for the years ahead.

Across these conversations, several themes have emerged clearly.

Listening to Our Community
Throughout the fall and winter, I asked questions designed to understand what people value most about Canterbury, how the School has shaped their lives, and where they see opportunity for growth.

Parents shared how meaningful it is to watch their children grow in confidence, character, and independence. Alumni reflected on the lifelong impact of their teachers, friendships, and formative experiences here. Faculty and staff spoke with passion about their work and their commitment to students, while also sharing ideas for strengthening support and sustainability in their roles.

Across every conversation, one message was unmistakable: Canterbury’s strength lies in the relationships that define this community and in the shared commitment to our mission and values.

The Questions Guiding Our Work
These conversations have shaped the questions now guiding our next steps. Many of them align with the four pillars of the Strategic Plan:

People — A central theme has been the experience of the people who make Canterbury what it is. What support do faculty and staff need to thrive over the arc of their careers? How do we continue to attract and retain exceptional educators and mentors?

Purpose — How does our Catholic identity continue to shape our culture and guide our decisions? How do we ensure that we enroll and graduate students who are not only academically and socially prepared but also inspired to be moral leaders in a complex, secular world? And is Purpose a pillar of our Strategic Plan or the foundation that underlies everything we do at Canterbury?

Program — We are exploring what makes the Canterbury experience distinctive and how we continue to strengthen it. What skills and habits of mind should we embed more intentionally in our academic and co-curricular offerings? How do we support students’ health, wellness, and sense of belonging? How do we assess our boarding and day community experiences for our students and continue to evolve and grow in areas that build a thriving, inclusive student experience?

Permanence — We are also examining long-term sustainability and access. What should our enrollment and financial aid models prioritize? How do we grow the endowment and ensure the School’s financial strength for generations to come?

In addition, we are exploring the possibility of a new focus on Place—our campus, facilities, and resources—and how our physical spaces can best support teaching, learning, and residential life in the years ahead.

Early Momentum
Listening must lead to action, and important work is already underway across many areas of school life. To keep this message brief, I have shared a more detailed overview of current initiatives and emerging program development on a dedicated webpage.

Looking Ahead Together
As we head into spring break, I am filled with tremendous gratitude for the partnership and candor of this community. The months ahead will be filled with the milestones and traditions that make the final stretch of the school year so meaningful.

I do not expect to have all the answers immediately. What I can promise is continued listening, thoughtful decision-making, and a steadfast focus on strengthening the School and community we cherish.

Thank you for your partnership and your trust. We are building Canterbury’s future together, and I am grateful to be part of this work with you.

With gratitude,

Caroline Blatti
