Honor Society Reception Celebrates Academic Excellence

Family members looked on proudly as 27 Sixth Form students were welcomed into Canterbury’s Honor Society at a special reception in the Steers Center Ragland Commons.

Founded during the 1989-1990 academic year to advance scholarship and foster the love of learning at Canterbury, the Honor Society presents stringent membership criteria that motivate and challenge students. Interim Head of School Sue Roberts P ’24, ’27 reminded attendees just how exceptional these students had to be to achieve this distinction. “Members of the Class of 2025 with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 or above are eligible,” she said. “They must be enrolled in a highly rigorous academic program which includes honors, Advanced Placement, and Syracuse University Project Advance classes in a diverse course of study. Students must also demonstrate academic integrity and consistent engagement as a positive contributor to the academic culture of the School.”

In keeping with the theme of academic excellence, the evening’s guest speaker was last year’s recipient of the J.P. Mandler Teaching Award, Director of Music David Overthrow. “To the Sixth Form, I have two words…thank you! I have learned so much from you,” Dave said. “This year, I have walked alongside you through tough battles, big challenges, and hard-won triumphs. And while challenges are guaranteed, what truly matters is how we respond. Time and again, you have responded with resilience, grit, and heart. I have seen you support one another, show compassion, and strive to lift up this community—traits that speak volumes about who you are.”

Congratulations to these Saints, whose outstanding achievements and dedication earned them entry into Canterbury’s Honor Society!
