Matthew Butcher Appointed as Dean of Faculty

Canterbury School is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Butcher as its next Dean of Faculty, effective July 1, 2026, following a thoughtful and highly competitive national search.

Matt joins Canterbury from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where he has served as Academic Dean since 2017. In that role, he has overseen all aspects of the academic program, working closely with faculty to ensure a dynamic, student-centered experience grounded in challenge, support, and meaningful engagement.

A seasoned educator and leader, Matt brings more than two decades of experience in independent schools. Prior to his current role, he served as English Department Chair for ten years, leading curriculum development and faculty growth, and as a classroom teacher across multiple levels, including Advanced Placement courses. His work has consistently focused on strengthening teaching and learning, supporting faculty development, and aligning academic programs with a clear and compelling vision for student success.

In addition to his academic leadership, Matt has made significant contributions to school life beyond the classroom. He has coached girls’ varsity soccer for over twenty years, leading teams to multiple league and NEPSAC championships, and has been recognized at both the state and regional levels for excellence in coaching.

Throughout his career, Matt has demonstrated a deep commitment to collaboration, professional growth, and the development of strong, connected school communities. At Brewster, he has played a key role in faculty hiring and evaluation, led initiatives tied to student recognition and assessment, and contributed to long-term strategic work, including the development of a portrait of a graduate and schoolwide program enhancements.

“I am eager to join Canterbury School and work along with the school's incredible faculty to deliver a powerful educational experience for all of its students,” said Matt. “Faculty do so much in service to the students they teach and lead, and I look forward to doing all that I can to help the faculty of Canterbury School thrive.”

Head of School Caroline Blatti noted that Matt stood out for his understanding of the rhythms and realities of boarding school life, as well as his ability to connect with colleagues across disciplines and support faculty in meaningful and lasting ways.

“Matt brings a clear vision for faculty support and development, along with a deep respect for the work already underway at Canterbury,” said Caroline. “He understands the central role faculty play in shaping the student experience and is committed to ensuring they have the support, resources, and partnership needed to do their best work.”
