Remembering Andrey Uryadov

 

The Canterbury School community is heartbroken by the loss of Andrey Uryadov—beloved coach, colleague, mentor, and friend. 

Though his time with us was far too short, Andrey found a home at Canterbury and a special place in the lives of so many. His loss is profound, and he will be deeply missed.

“Andrey embraced Canterbury,” said Head of School Caroline Blatti. “He threw himself wholeheartedly into this community, and in return, our community came to know and love him. He brought such joy and generosity to the life of the School, but what I will remember most is the way he cared for people. His relationships were genuine, his belief in our students was deeply felt, and I am profoundly grateful for all that he gave to Canterbury in the time we were fortunate enough to have him with us.”

Andrey joined Canterbury in 2025 as a member of the Admission team and Associate Head Coach of Boys Varsity Hockey. His ability to connect with people was immediate and genuine. He welcomed prospective students and families with enthusiasm, cared deeply for his advisees, and formed friendships with colleagues across the School. Andrey made people feel that they mattered.

But it was at the rink where so many came to know Coach Uryadov best. Hockey was a defining passion in Andrey’s life, but for him, coaching was always about more than wins and losses. He believed in his players. He challenged them, encouraged them, celebrated them, and cared deeply about their growth both on and off the ice.

After serving as Associate Head Coach, Andrey was preparing to lead Boys Varsity Hockey as Head Coach for the 2026–27 season. He embraced that opportunity with tremendous pride and excitement. He had a clear and ambitious vision for Canterbury Hockey, one that respected the program’s proud history while looking confidently toward its future.

“Andrey had a clear vision for what Canterbury Hockey could become, but his impact went well beyond the program itself,” said Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars Rob Morris. “He cared deeply about his players and believed in what this community could offer them. We will honor his legacy by carrying forward the commitment, ambition, and genuine care for young people that he brought to his work every day.”

Those who knew Andrey will remember so much more than the roles he held. We will remember his infectious energy. His generosity. His humor. The intensity with which he cared about the things—and the people—he loved. We will remember a colleague who became a friend, a mentor who believed in his students, and a coach whose influence reached far beyond the boards of the rink.

There is profound sadness in knowing how much more Andrey had to give and how much more we imagined he would share with Canterbury. Yet there is also deep gratitude that he chose to give a part of his life to this community. We will miss him deeply, remember him with great affection, and carry forward the spirit, passion, and sense of possibility he brought to our hilltop.
