Sacristans Installed at School Year’s First Mass

Sacristans Installed at School Year’s First Mass

On Sunday, September 15, the Canterbury community gathered in the Chapel of Our Lady for the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the first Mass of the school year. The ceremony included the installation of our new Sacristans—Sixth Form students who were selected last fall to assume one of the most respected and highly regarded leadership positions at Canterbury. The Mass was celebrated by the School’s Chaplain, Father Brendan Horan, S.J.

These Saints demonstrated the faith, character, and leadership qualities required for the role, and throughout the year they will help organize retreats, offer daily reflections and prayers at School Meeting, and inspire everyone in our interfaith community to participate in service opportunities.

In her remarks during the service, Interim Head of School Sue Roberts P ’24, ’27 delivered an important message to the Sacristans.

“Find ways to explain to others why a journey focused on spirituality, service, and compassion is worth the effort,” she said. “Your job is to model your understanding of the role you play in the lives of others, to spark conversation about belief and faith, and to be leaders of spiritual growth. To inspire.”

Dressed in traditional altar server robes, the Sacristans sat together during the Mass. After the homily, Sue invited the group of 11 to receive their Sacristan crucifixes and declare their statement of fidelity and service to the Canterbury community.

“I have spent the past three years admiring the Sacristans and being inspired by their selflessness and presence at retreats and Masses,” Eva shared after the ceremony. “Now, I finally get to follow their lead. I look forward to a year of joining my fellow Sacristans to nourish the spirituality of our campus, especially with Father Horan embracing us so kindly. I am extremely grateful to him for his support.”

Congratulations, Eva, Sophia, Audrey, Kieran, Clare, Juliana, Emily, Patrice, Brandon, Gracie, and Connor!
