Saints Alumnus Shines in First Season with Colby Baseball
The numbers don’t lie…Myles Gythfeldt ’24 made a significant impact during his highly successful freshman year with the Colby College baseball team.
The talented shortstop posted a .408 batting average, second in the conference, along with a .480 on-base percentage and .957 OPS. Myles’s 53 hits were also second in the NESCAC, and he drove in 32 runs for the Mules with 13 stolen bases. Even better, he helped lead the team to the number one seed in the NESCAC conference during the regular season before a tough loss to Williams College late in the conference tournament ended their run. Colby finished with a 23-14 record.
Myles’s Head Coach at Canterbury, Director of Studies Todd Mathewson, expected nothing less than excellence at the next level for his former star player. “Myles had an outstanding post-graduate year at Canterbury offensively, defensively, and on the mound. Additionally, and even more importantly, he was a leader on the team and a phenomenal member of the campus community,” Todd said. “He continued to get stronger in the weight room and used the extra year to prepare himself for his time at Colby. I am not surprised by Myles’s success in his first year, and I am proud of the growth he continues to demonstrate. I cannot wait to see what the future holds!”
That future certainly looks bright. The standout freshman’s accomplishments were recognized not only by the NESCAC Conference but regionally as well. Among his accolades:
- D3baseball.com—NCAA DIII All-Region Second Team
- American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings—NCAA DIII All-Region Third Team
- NESCAC All-Conference First Team
- NESCAC Rookie of the Year
Myles was just the second player in Colby Baseball history to be named the conference’s top rookie. He was both excited about his first college season and grateful for his Canterbury experience.
“The season at Colby was fun! We had a very good team, so it was about trusting my teammates and doing what I could to help us win. At the end of the day, we were a tight-knit group of brothers who enjoyed spending time together,” he said. “And I am so glad I did the prep school year at Canterbury. It helped me navigate the balance of school work and baseball in college, and I played with and against some great players there.”
With his freshman year at Colby behind him, Myles is eager to build on his success. “Playing postseason baseball was amazing, and finding out about the awards was surreal because it meant the coaches across the league acknowledged the type of season I had,” he shared. “All of that was great, but now I am setting my sights on next season. Where can I go from here? What I do next is the most important thing.” Your Saints family will be rooting for you, Myles!
