At Pink Out, the only thing more impressive than the enthusiastic sea of pink in the Pigott Arena stands was the significance of the cause it was supporting. The annual event run by the Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team was once again a smashing success.
Held in October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fundraiser benefits the Susan G. Komen organization, the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. This year’s Pink Out raised more than $2,000 for Komen, whose mission is “to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.”
That mission is what makes Pink Out so meaningful to the players, according to Co-Captain Addison Lau ’25. “For the team and the School, this event is about more than just volleyball or a game; it is a chance for us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and show up in solidarity,” Addison said. “Our community always comes through in the best way to back this cause. I hope those affected by breast cancer see Pigott filled with pink, feel the love and support, and know they are not alone in their fight.”
Although the team dropped its match to a tough Greenwich Country Day School squad, they were all winners that night. “Seeing everyone come together for something that touches so many people is phenomenal,” said Head Coach and Director of Community Life Elyse “EJ” Soifersmith P ’27, ’27. “I am proud of my team for their hard work and dedication to this event…proud of our community for their support…and proud to call myself a Saint!”
Money raised came from t-shirt sales (a sellout for the second consecutive year!); a bake sale featuring treats created by faculty, staff, and students; and donations at the door during the game. Kudos to EJ, Addison, Co-Captain Hanna Gleason ’25, the rest of the players and coaches, and the entire Canterbury community for a job well done!
