A high-energy Spirit Week at Canterbury produced outstanding results for FGS Day in Washington, Connecticut, on Saturday, November 9. Our Saints athletes were inspired to take five of the seven games against longtime rival The Frederick Gunn School, extending their Canterbury-FGS Cup lead to 11-2 at the close of the fall season.
Girls’ Varsity and JV Soccer, Boys’ Varsity Soccer, JV Field Hockey, and Varsity Volleyball all won their matchups to pace Canterbury’s efforts. The Canterbury-FGS Cup is awarded annually to the school that wins the most athletic contests throughout the year. After a down-to-the-wire win by FGS last year, the Saints are off to a great start in their quest to regain the Cup.
Spirit Week was filled with excitement! Each day featured a different theme cooked up by the Sixth Form Council that led to some interesting apparel choices for members of our community:
Monday—Pajama Day️
Tuesday—Tropical Day
Wednesday—Hat/Anything but a Backpack Day
Thursday—Jersey Day
Friday—Gunn Day T-Shirts/Spirit Dress
School Meetings throughout the week were even louder than usual, with motivational videos created and shared by students and inspired shoutouts to our athletes. It all led up to the Friday night Pep Rally filled with friendly competitions, creative skits, lively dances, and high energy.
The week was a major success thanks in large part to the dedication of the Sixth Form Council. “With plenty of hard work, late nights, and preparation, we sought to fill the week with exciting events and themes to involve the entire community,” said Council member Sophia Faruol ’25. “The pep rally hyped everyone up to play their hardest and win against Gunn on Saturday!”
For fellow Council member Brandon Rodriguez ’25, the event was a long time coming. “Helping to run Spirit Week and FGS day as a part of the Sixth Form Council is something I have wanted to do since I was a Third Former,” he shared. “To finally make it happen feels surreal.”
That enthusiasm was greatly appreciated by their peers and everyone on campus. “The Sixth Form Council did a great job,” Associate Dean of Students/DEIJ Meredith Berry-Toon said. “It was important to raise spirits and end the fall season on a high note. We love celebrating Canterbury as much as competing against FGS.”
There is no place quite like the Canterbury hilltop during Spirit Week—and there is nothing quite like earning big wins against our biggest rival. Roll Saints!
