The Saints are keeping the Cup! Our student-athletes and coaches made sure the Canterbury-FGS Cup wasn’t going anywhere this year by outlasting long-time rival The Frederick Gunn School (FGS) by a final tally of 26-17-1. FGS Athletic Director Mike Marich showed his usual good grace as he returned to present the Cup to Sixth Form Council member Riley McPhee ’23 at a boisterous School Meeting in Maguire Auditorium.
First introduced in 2018, the Canterbury-FGS Cup is awarded annually to the school that wins the most athletic contests throughout the year. This spirited competition and camaraderie carries on a rivalry that has been going strong for more than a century!
That same morning, our Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team was lauded for finishing as champions of the Canterbury Invitational Tournament.
It was all part of the School’s Spring Athletic Award Assembly, where coaches honored the Saints who particularly distinguished themselves during the season. The Crew, Track, Golf, and Lacrosse teams each named a Coaches’ Award recipient and a Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In addition to naming MVPs, the Softball and Baseball teams presented the Barbara Frank Sheehan Softball Award and Class of 1962 Baseball Award to the players who exhibited courage, leadership, team spirit, and ability that exemplifies Canterbury Athletics. Each Tennis team also awarded MVPs with additional presentations of the Horace E. Tennes Girls’ Tennis Award for outstanding contribution to the girls’ tennis program and the William Stephanek ’78 Boys’ Tennis Award recognizing leadership.
A round of applause for the recipients…
