Winter Athletic Awards Recognize Outstanding Canterbury Athletes

Winter Athletic Awards winners pose together in Maguire Auditorium.

Canterbury’s winter season was marked by determination, grit, and unparalleled sportsmanship. Whether on the court, on the ice, or in the pool, the Saints gave it their all. On May 1, individual players were recognized for their accomplishments at the Winter Athletic Awards Ceremony during School Meeting. Hockey, Basketball, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, and Squash coaches presented the Coach’s Award and Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors to the athletes who were especially outstanding this season. An additional 15 players received recognition from the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC).

“Although today is about individual achievement, we know that no trophy or plaque is won in isolation,” said Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars Rob Morris. “We honor the truth that with God’s strength and our teamwork, we never walk or compete alone.”

Congratulations to all of the recipients…

After applauding the honorees, Mr. Morris turned his attention to celebrate Boys’ Varsity Hockey coach Padraic “Paddy” McCarthy ’94, P ’29, who recently announced that he would be stepping down as the program’s Head Coach.

“For 21 years, Coach McCarthy has been the heartbeat of this program,” he said. “Paddy, thank you for your dedication, your wisdom, and for living the Canterbury values.”

Fortunately for the community, Coach McCarthy will remain here on the hilltop as the team’s Assistant Coach. He passes the torch to Andrey Uryadov, who has served as Associate Head Coach and arrived on the hilltop in 2025 with Division I experience and a strong record of player development.

Coach McCarthy was humble in the face of an all-School standing ovation but shared a message of thanks later. “I was humbled by Mr. Morris’ kind words and your warm applause, but Saints Hockey is bigger than one person or one team in particular. I am excited to see where we go from here.”
