English

In the English Department at Canterbury, you'll cultivate the essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking that will prepare you for the rigorous demands of a college curriculum. Through novels, plays, short stories, and poems, you'll be exposed to a rich array of both classic and contemporary world literature, fostering a deep appreciation for the diverse literary contributions of various cultures and genders. You'll also hone your writing abilities by practicing revision techniques, enabling you to craft polished essays in a range of styles—narrative, descriptive, and analytic.

To understand the English language as a vehicle of thought, to read literature in order to develop intellectual and ethical discrimination, empathy, and a literary esthetic, to enjoy reading and writing, and to develop self-discipline as both a reader and writer
