Our Director of Curriculum and Director of Studies carefully review your transcripts from this past year and make decisions based upon what they see and your past teacher recommendations. Then, they will contact you over the summer with a proposed class schedule. You can approve the schedule, or if you have questions, you are welcome to connect with them and they will work with you to place you accordingly. Even if you are concerned about your placement level in a particular course, we have a two-week Add/Drop period during which you will be able to affirm your course placement.

You will begin your classes and then your teachers will make you aware of what you need to have for the year. Do not feel pressure to have any supplies when classes first begin. You can also get supplies during school trips to Walmart, CVS, and Staples in the first week of school. For a preliminary school supplies list, click here.

Each day student is assigned their own locker. It is up to you to determine which books you need to bring back and forth between home and school.

Books can be purchased through our online bookstore, Follett Virtual Bookstore. Please note that we use a third-party vendor.

For information concerning extended time on standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, ACT), please contact Alison Bailey and send the appropriate documentation as soon as possible to minimize any potential delay in meeting upcoming College Board/ACT deadlines. 

There are several reasons why a boarding student would need to sign out to go off campus. Below are some examples of different types of sign outs and the permissions the Student Life Office would need for each.

Canterbury uses an online platform called REACH to assist with off-campus requests, permissions, and overnight protocols. All students have a REACH login via their Canterbury Gmail account, and new students gain access to the platform upon registration during their first day on campus. Both day and boarding students use REACH. Parents and guardians do not need a REACH login in order to give off-campus permissions: students are asked to initiate their own leave requests and the adults involved receive an email to approve or deny the request along with details of the off-campus ask. 

REACH (or leave) request should be submitted 

• Anytime a boarding student plans to miss a check-in or school commitment (class, practice, performance).
• Anytime a boarding student plans to depart campus or a Canterbury commitment (example: away game) in a non-Canterbury or non-family vehicle (example: teammate’s car).
• Anytime a day student plans to miss a full day or more of school commitments (example: college visit).

When submitting a “REACH”, students populate the request with departure and arrival times, transportation details, a few details on the reason for their departure (“going home for weekend,” “sleeping at friend’s house for the night”), and, when applicable, contact information for those at their destination. With the information populated, students submit their request. Parents and guardians then receive an email with the details of their student’s request and the ability to accept or deny the off-campus leave. With the parents’ decision, the Student Life Office and Dorm Heads accept or deny the leave in tandem with the parents’ wishes except in cases where students’ attendance records necessitate that they attend a Sunday detention.

Students should select “sign in with Google” and use their Canterbury account to access their REACH accounts. Again, new students will not have access until their first day on campus during registration 

Signing out during the academic day for a medical appointment:

Day students who need to sign out for only part of the day for a medical appointment should contact the Student Life Office at studentlife@cbury.org or 860-210-3860/3861. We ask that families let the School know at least 24 hours in advance. Boarding students who need to sign out for part of the day for a medical appointment that is not scheduled through our Health Center should submit a REACH request. 

Signing out overnight during the academic week:

While we like to minimize the number of times boarding students sign out overnight during the academic week, certain situations arise where a student needs to sign out of the dorm for a night. In these cases, students should submit a REACH request that gets sent to the Student Life Office, Dorm Head, and parents/guardians for approval. 

If day students plan to “sign out” during the academic week (as in they will miss a number of school commitments during one or more days), they should plan to submit a leave request instead of or in addition to communicating with the Student Life Office via phone or email.

Signing out for the weekend:

Students are expected to attend all commitments, including athletic requirements (practice or contest) before signing out for the weekend. Boarding students who wish to sign out for the weekend, just as in the situations above, should submit a REACH request. Again, the request gets sent to the Student Life Office, Dorm Head, and parents/guardians for approval. 

There are three weekends each academic year that ALL boarding students are required to remain on campus: the first two weekends of the year and Commencement Weekend (Underformers only).

Any boarding students who must serve a Sunday detention due to unexcused absences will not be permitted to leave that weekend.

Boarding students are not permitted to have cars on campus. On rare occasions, exceptions are made for short-term reasons. All exceptions must be approved by the Student Life Office. For boarding families interested in learning more about car permissions should email or call the office directly at 860-210-3860/3861. 

Day students with licenses are permitted to have cars on campus and are required to register their vehicle through the Student Life Office. There are specific locations on campus where day students of different Forms are required to park. During each registration date in the fall, day students who are planning to drive to campus regularly will be able to register their car and receive their parking space. There is no cost associated with having a vehicle on campus. 

Day students with cars are not permitted to use their vehicles during the day until following their final commitment, academic, athletic, or otherwise. Day students can never drive boarding students—even within the confines of campus—without the correct permissions in place. Day students should also refrain from driving other day students unless it is at the end of their commitment for the day. 

If a day student receives their license during the year, they should plan to physically come to the Student Life Office to register their vehicle and receive an on-campus sticker.

During appropriate times, students can request to use an Uber, ride with a friend's parents, or ride with a day student. Students who are requesting permission to depart campus in an Uber or with a day student should submit a leave request via REACH with the details filled out as appropriate. Both the Student Life Office and the student's Dorm Head must receive permission from the student's parent/guardian via the REACH request before the student departs.

Students are permitted to keep over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or Nyquil in their dorm rooms. All prescription medications, however, must be registered with the Health Center. Families will have a chance to register and drop-off medication with the Health Center during registration. Students who take daily medication report to the Health Center each day to receive their medication.

There are many instances when a day student may want or need to spend the night on campus (e.g.,snow storms, after a weekend activity that ends late, to spend time with boarding friends, etc.). We are happy to accommodate students in these situations and will do so on a case-by-case basis throughout the year. 

During free time, students are permitted to walk anywhere on our extended campus. Extended campus includes downtown New Milford up to the Big Y Supermarket in one direction and Colosseo Restaurant in the other direction. Prior to walking to these locations, students must change their location on REACH from on-campus to “Downtown” and vice versa upon return. Students must be back on immediate campus before the sun goes down.

Dorm room sizes vary depending on the number of students per room, with approximate measurements as follows:

• Single: 8 x 9 feet  
• Double: 12 x 16 feet  
• Triple: 12 x 17 feet
