Move-In

In preparation for our entire community’s return to campus, student arrivals will be staggered according to the following schedule:

• August 30 - Student Leaders
• August 31 - Returning Varsity & Invited Athletes 
• September 6 - All Other Students

A detailed schedule of registration dates for each of the above dates as well as schedules for the student leadership seminars and preseason will be published within the coming weeks. For those with flights organizing timely arrival to campus for registration, families can plan for each day’s registration to take place between the hours listed above. 

Dorm Rooms

Dorm room sizes vary depending on the number of students per room, with approximate measurements as follows:

• Single: 8 x 9 feet  
• Double: 12 x 16 feet  
• Triple: 12 x 17 feet

Laundry Service

Dorm students wishing to do their own laundry on campus have access to card activated washers and dryers located in the dorms. To utilize these machines, students will need a laundry card and access to cash to add additional loads of wash to their card. A kiosk to add funds to the card is located in the basement of Steel Hall.

An initial laundry card will be provided to each electing to use on campus laundry. The card is pre-loaded with $3.90, which will be directly charged to the student’s debit card account. Laundry cards are reusable and should be kept for use the entire duration of the student’s attendance at Canterbury School. If a card is lost, stolen or damaged, the replacement fee for each card is $5.00. 

One load of wash = $3.90 ($1.95 wash / $1.95 dry)

For dorm students not wanting to do all or part of their laundry, Canterbury School works with E & R The Campus Laundry to provide a full line of pick-up and delivery laundry and dry cleaning services to accommodate our student’s needs. They offer a couple of options which you can contact directly for your different needs: eandrcleaners.com.

Students may also walk downtown to the green in New Milford to use either of the two local laundry and dry cleaning establishments.

Additional questions on boarding student information, please contact the Student Life Office via email or phone. We are also happy to put new families in touch with the Dorm Head and Proctors (student leaders) of each dorm for additional details.

Day students are not only welcome but strongly encouraged to remain on campus in the evening to use the study facilities and Steers Center and to participate in all school-sponsored activities and trips. Day students are welcome to come for breakfast and to stay for dinner.

All international students need to deliver their passport, I-20 and visa to the Student Life Office upon arrival to Canterbury. International students are scheduled to be on campus for registration on August 31 or September 6 and will have access to nearby stores to purchase necessary items (bedding, toiletries, fan, etc).

Canterbury believes that the classroom dress should reflect the seriousness of academic pursuits. Therefore, all clothing must be neat, clean, respectful, and professional and worn throughout the entirety of the Academic Day: 8:00 AM–3:30 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; 8:00 AM–12:30 PM on Wednesday and Saturday; and during Sunday Mass and Brunch.  All students participating in class are expected to adhere to this dress code. Exceptions to Canterbury Dress Code must be pre-approved by the Student Life Office and/or Canterbury Health Center staff. 

Classroom Dress 

A tucked-in button-down shirt with a collar, a golf/polo shirt (2-3 button) with a collar, or a formal blouse must be worn with chino/khaki pants, corduroys, or a skirt. A cardigan sweater, quarter zip sweater or V-neck sweater is acceptable over a tucked-in button-down shirt with a collar, a golf/polo shirt (2-3 button) with a collar, or a formal blouse. Dresses are also acceptable except those that are strapless. Students must be clean-shaven and covered from mid-chest to mid-thigh. 

Canterbury apparel that meets the above requirements is also allowed. This includes quarter zip and V-neck sweaters but does not include sweatshirts, hooded or otherwise.

Slippers, flip-flops, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, baseball hats, ear/headphones, crop tops, sweatshirts of any kind, hooded or otherwise, sweatpants, joggers, leggings, and denim are not permitted for Classroom Dress or Formal Dress unless specifically approved by the Student Life Office.

Saints Formal Dress

Students should expect to be in Formal Dress at least once a week on Tuesdays during the fall semester and at least once a week during the spring semester. There will also be regular occasions when Formal Dress Code is required (e.g., special meals, specific Form events, award assemblies). Formal Dress includes:

• Dresses or skirts with button-down or dress shirt and formal shoes. Sleeveless and spaghetti-strap dresses must be worn with a cardigan sweater or a blazer.
• Blazer, button-down shirt, tie, chinos/khaki pants, and formal shoes.
   

Saints Spirit Dress

Spirit Dress may be announced in conjunction with a sporting event. Spirit dress includes a Canterbury top, shirt, or sweatshirt and can be worn with jeans, sweatpants, joggers, or leggings.

Incoming mail and packages are sorted on a daily basis.

• Packages: When a package is delivered, it is scanned into a smart package locker and an email notification is automatically sent to the student’s school email. The subject line of the email is “Package Receipt Notification” from noreply@qtrak.net, and will contain a picture of the package and any specific notes regarding the delivery, like perishable.
• Pickup Window: To ensure space is available in the lockers for all deliveries, you must retrieve your packages within 72 hours. Items left longer than 72 hours will be returned to the Mailroom for in person pickup during normal business hours.
• Accessibility: The lockers are available for pickup anytime Steele Hall is open and accessible.
• Large Items: If a package is too large for the lockers, it will be held in the Mailroom for in person pickup and will be noted in your email notification.
• Letter Mail: Student mail will be scanned and an email notification will automatically be sent to the student’s school email stating in the subject line, “You Have Letter Mail” from noreply@qtrak.net and should come to the Mailroom during normal business hours for pickup.

Outgoing mail and package services are provided for the following types of shipments:

• Domestic Packages: Assistance is available for Students who need to send a letter or package via USPS, UPS, or FedEx.
• International Packages: Students should reach out to Student Life for assistance sending an international package. These shipments will need to be brought directly to the carrier to be processed.
• Mail and Package Costs: Students may pay for mail, shipping supplies and postage in cash or have their Canterbury Debit Account charged, provided funds are available.

Like many independent schools in Connecticut and across the country, Canterbury strongly recommends that all community members stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. Canterbury School arranges bus transportation with faculty and staff drivers for school vacations on the schedule provided below. Fares are charged to the student’s debit card accounts based on the number of travelers per vehicle.  Buses to and from Bradley International Airport, Westchester Airport, Brewster Train Station, Danbury Bus Station, LaGuardia Airport and JFK Airport are available at times specified below.

Students in need of ground transportation to or from airports or bus stations should make arrangements through the Student Life Office. Students are asked to complete a travel survey prior to every vacation. Local taxi companies provide travel services for a fee and accept cash or credit cards; students are not  permitted to charge taxi fares to the School. Students may not call taxis or car services for local day leave permissions.

If a student misses a connection or has a change of plans, transportation must be canceled through the Student Life Office during regular school business hours to avoid the charge for any ground transportation that has been ordered. After school hours, parents/guardians are asked to report changes in plans to the Administrator on Duty at 860-605-6084.

Prior to the opening of school in the fall, we understand that students may have transportation requests.  We will accommodate the requests as best we can but, due to faculty meetings and obligations, we cannot guarantee pickup.  Families are asked to email us at studentlife@cbury.org with those requests and include itineraries.

Buses or vans run to and from (see schedule below):

• Bradley International Airport (Hartford, CT), baggage claim downstairs, Terminal A

• JFK Airport, baggage claim area, Terminal 1

• LaGuardia Airport, baggage claim, Terminal A
   

For 1:00 pm departures from School, do not make plane reservations before 4:00 pm at Bradley International Airport and before 5:00 pm at New York airports.

For Bradley Airport, plan to have the flight land no later than 3:00 pm. For 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm pick-ups at LaGuardia and JFK International Airports, plan for the flight to land no later than 2:30 pm. For Westchester Airport, plan for the flight to land no later than 4:30 pm. 

While Canterbury will drop off/pick up at LaGuardia and JFK, we recommend that parents and students use Westchester Airport (HPN) or Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Hartford, CT.  They are located approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from campus, allowing much faster and easier travel for your child.  Landing at JFK or LaGuardia airports may be a less expensive airfare, but the cost of reaching campus from there can offset your savings.  It can also add an additional three to four hours of travel to your trip.  If you do use NYC airports, you may want to consider taking the airport shuttle to Grand Central Station, then riding the Metro-North to the Brewster station.

Participation beyond the classroom is an essential part of life at Canterbury. All students are required to participate in a sport or afternoon activity during each season—fall (start of school through the second week of November), winter (third week of November through the last weekend in February), and spring (end of March to middle of May). During at least two of those three seasons, students must participate in a competitive (interscholastic) sport or approved equivalent activity.

We strongly encourage multi-sport participation and discourage an early focus on a single activity. Students who participate in three interscholastic varsity sports during the school year are recognized with a special award at our end-of-year awards ceremony. The success of our interscholastic sports teams is directly related to multi–sport participation. 

We also encourage new students to immerse themselves fully in all aspects of School life. Participation on a competitive team during the fall of your first year is a time-tested way to build friendships, establish healthy routines, and become connected to the Canterbury community. Starting a new school is a perfect time to try new things—perhaps a sport you always wanted to experience—and you may discover a new passion. 

Students who seek to participate in an off-campus alternative or in an activity or sport that Canterbury does not offer must speak with the Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars and submit a written proposal for an exemption. The proposal, including rationale, must provide evidence of a long-standing commitment to the activity, and the overall time commitment must be equivalent to that which comes with participation in an interscholastic sport. 

Alternative Programs to participation in Competitive Interscholastic Athletics

(Note: due to several factors, competitive interscholastic athletic roster sizes and alternative activity roster sizes may be limited. Interscholastic Sports teams do have tryouts and make cuts. Some activities may not run if the roster size limits their viability.)

• Community Service: Volunteer and make a difference through service projects and partnerships with local organizations that support the New Milford community and beyond.
• Digital Media & Film Production: Create videos, photos, podcasts, and other digital content that serve to support and promote our athletic, co-curricular offerings, and community.
• Equestrian: Develop riding skills and learn more about horsemanship.
• Recreational Sports: Stay active and have fun through non-competitive recreational sports and activities.
• Robotics: Design, build, and program robots while working as part of a team that prepares during the fall for competitions in the winter. 
• STEM Research: Explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on projects and research.
• Strength & Conditioning: Develop strength, speed, power, and overall athleticism through a supervised program led by two professional strength-and-conditioning coaches. (Note: Students participating on fall, winter, and spring interscholastic teams will also receive in-season strength and conditioning training as an integral part of their interscholastic team commitment.)
• Theater: Practice techniques unique to musical productions—such as singing, dancing, and behind-the-scenes collaboration—through rehearsal and performance of Canterbury’s annual Spring Musical. (By audition in winter only.)
• AP Art Portfolio: Available to serious art students enrolled in AP Drawing, AP Two-Dimensional Design, and/or AP Three-Dimensional Design. (Per approval of the Visual Arts Department Chair.)
• Independent Music: Develop your technique, skill, and style in voice or instrument. (Spring only, per approval of the Performing Arts Department Chair.)
• Yearbook: Create and edit this year’s copy of The Cantuarian. (Editors only.)

Attendance at athletic practices and contests is required from the first day of each season. Students who wish to change sports can do so only during the first two weeks of a season. After tryouts and cuts have been made, students who have not made the team roster must sign up for another activity the next day by seeing a representative of the Athletic Department to choose from the remaining activities.  After two weeks, students remain in the sport they have selected. While playing time is guaranteed at lower levels, it is not assured at the varsity level. Attendance is taken daily by the coaches and reported to the Student Life Office. Absences for reasons of injury or illness may be authorized only by the School Nurse and the Athletic Trainer. At the discretion of the Student Life Office, students who have two or more unexcused absences on a given day may not be allowed to participate in athletics. Overnights and weekends do not begin until the conclusion of a student’s athletic commitment.

The use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products violates both school and training rules. Violators of the Major Rule regarding drugs and alcohol may not play in their next game, although they must attend it and all practice sessions. Violators must also forfeit any and all leadership positions until the conclusion of their probation. (See Major Rule #1 and Policy on Alcohol and Other Drugs)
