Steers Center

Coming Together to Learn, Serve, and Enjoy

The stunning 22,000-square-foot Steers Center embodies the School’s core mission of developing well-rounded students who are critical thinkers and ethical leaders. This unique blend of carefully planned spaces not only supports your intellectual and social development, but inspires your growth as an individual.

Inside the Steers Center, you will find our Innovation & Design and Digital Media Labs, where you can develop your critical analysis, design-thinking, and digital competencies—skills essential to you in college and beyond. The Steers Center is also home to our D’Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice, the central hub for community service, social justice advocacy, student retreats, and leadership programming. Finally, the facility has a vibrant and welcoming student center—the Ragland Commons—and café where you can relax and spend time with your friends. Our entire community often gathers together there for special events.

Steers Innovation & Design Lab

This hands-on, interactive lab is where your creativity shines. Open to all students, including those in our innovation lab courses, the facility features 3D printers, laser cutters, circular saws, drills, and more for designing, prototyping, and testing various projects. It provides an ideal space for students to construct towers and other structures to understand load-bearing weight and distribution, learn how to design and create 3D-printable objects, build items out of PVC pipe, use software to study the basics of design, and more.

Coleman Digital Media Lab

This multi-purpose lab meets your every digital need. It includes a space with lighting, backdrops, and a green screen ideal for photo and video shoots as well as podcasts. The room can be rearranged as needed for different settings. Another section offers 10 Mac Studio stations and numerous Wacom tablets for students to design and draw on. Students in the digital lab courses use the equipment for video, photography, and digital illustration. The Colman Digital Media Lab is generally available for community use with guidance.

Ragland Commons

This spacious, lively student center is a hub of activity for campus events, guest speakers, and special dinners, or simply for students to relax and have fun together. In addition to generous table seating and couches in the open floor plan, the space features foosball and pool tables, a riser for performances and presentations, a large-screen TV, an adjacent café, and fire pits just outside on the patio. The area is named to reflect the generosity and devotion of Canterbury Board President Nicholas Ragland ’88, P ’21 and Joelle Ragland P ’21.

Commons Café

Located just off the Ragland Commons, the Café is a must-stop in the Steers Center for hungry and thirsty students—or anyone else on campus, for that matter! it is ideal for a quick snack, sweet treat (mmm, warm cookies!), smoothie, cool drink, or cup of coffee to get you through the day. You can also get burgers, poke bowls, breakfast burritos, and the ever-popular bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. The Café is open Monday–Saturday from 9:30–11:30 AM and 1:30–5:30 PM; and Sunday from 1:30–5:00 PM.
