International Applicants

Anyone who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States is considered an international student.

While we strongly encourage you to come experience our campus in person—there is nothing quite like being here!—we understand travel to campus may not be possible for all families, so in these cases, a Zoom interview can be scheduled.

International students are asked to complete an online inquiry form prior to scheduling an interview. Once the inquiry form has been completed, applicants are asked to contact us at admission@cbury.org or 860-210-3832 to set up a visit or Zoom interview.

Due to the high number of applications from Mainland China, we have partnered with Vericant to provide an in-person interview opportunity for these applicants not currently attending a school in the U.S. Vericant will conduct recorded interviews and collect short writing samples. No. Canterbury uses a common admission application for independent schools called the Standard Application Online (SAO), offered through ssat.org. We use this material to assess how well you will fit into our school community.

International families are charged an additional fee due to the enhanced level of advising and programming provided to ensure a smooth transition and successful experience at Canterbury. This fee supports dedicated resources such as personalized  advising, orientation programs, and ongoing support tailored to the unique needs of international students, ensuring they thrive both academically and personally during their time at our School.

For the 2025-2026 application cycle, Canterbury requires all international applicants to submit standardized testing scores. Standardized testing for the admission process depends on the grade you are applying to:

Grade 9, 10 (Third or Fourth Form)
SSAT

Grade 11 (Fifth Form)
PSAT, SAT, ACT, or SSAT

Postgraduate (PG)
SAT or ACT

The preferred time to schedule a standardized test is on the November or December dates. We encourage you to register for a test as soon as possible since registration deadlines come well in advance of the test administration dates.

When registering for the SSAT, please use Canterbury's school code (2050) to ensure the results will be sent directly to our Admission Office.

English Proficiency Assessments

All international applicants are required to submit standardized test scores as listed above. In addition, non-native English-speaking applicants are required to submit scores from one of the following tests:

• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) using Canterbury's school code: 7219
• Duolingo (a school code is not required)

Minimum Required Scores

• TOEFL: Minimum score of 90
• Duolingo: Minimum score of 120 

The minimum score requirements apply to students applying for the Third and Fourth Forms. Applicants to the Fifth Form and Postgraduate program are expected to exceed these scores.

The TOEFL or Duolingo test is not required for applicants who have attended a school where English is the primary mode of instruction for three years or more.

Financial aid is available to international students on a very limited basis. As with domestic applicants, all financial aid is determined by your family’s demonstrated need for financial support. You can find more information on how to apply for aid here.

The admissions application deadline is January 15 for all students. The financial aid deadline is January 15.

Applications completed by the January 15 deadline are included in our first round of admission decisions, and students are notified of our decision by March 10. Applications submitted past the January 15 deadline are reviewed on a rolling basis. 

All admissions decisions are released through the Admission Portal. 

At the latest, accepted students must inform Canterbury of their decision to enroll by April 10.  Enrollment contracts and deposits are due by this date.

Canterbury will issue an I-20 after receiving your enrollment contract and deposit. I-20s are usually emailed out to new students in early June. This should provide enough time to obtain the proper visas and make travel arrangements.

Our small campus environment ensures that you will receive the one-on-one support you need to acclimate to your new surroundings.

• The Director of International Students and Student Life Office provide ongoing assistance to you from day one, starting with a special orientation program in the fall.
   

• New international students are matched with a returning international student who we call a “Buddy.” You International Student Buddy can answer questions specifically dealing with international student matters during the summer and will also help you acclimate to boarding life once you arrive on campus. Returning Buddies will reach out via email over the summer to introduce themselves, offer to answer questions, and help navigate your transition to Canterbury. 
   

• Our International Student Ambassadors are amazing peer resources. They have had the same experiences and know just what you need to adjust to life at Canterbury. Throughout the year, these ambassadors help plan opportunities for the entire community to share heritages, cultures, and cuisines.
   

• Numerous campus programs and events such as International Week, International AfFair, Passover Seder, Easter Vigil, Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) observance, and Saints on the Hill inspire students to share their faiths and traditions with the community.

Canterbury School maintains a safe, secure campus at all times.

• We have a diligent Security Department watching over our community, and it is everyone’s shared responsibility to foster a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Specific policies and procedures are provided and followed, and emergency protocols are tested on a regular basis through safety drills and mass notifications.
   

• All dorms have building access control systems installed.
   

• A School Safety Committee meets quarterly and as needed to review and consider safety and risk management matters.
   

• The New Milford Police Department is less than one mile from campus.
   

• Plus, New Milford is a safe, peaceful town with crime rates significantly lower than the national average.

Anyone under the age of 18 is required to have legal guardianship prior to arrival in order to live and attend school in the United States. Your parents are responsible for designating your U.S. guardian, who will advocate for you, provide the support you need, and care for you during breaks and when the dorms are not open.
