Our Academic Counselors carefully review your transcripts from this past year and make decisions based on what they see and your past teacher recommendations. Then, they will contact you over the summer with a proposed class schedule. You can approve the schedule or connect with them if you have questions—the Counselors will work with you to place you accordingly. Even if you are concerned about your placement level in a particular course, we have a two-week Add/Drop period during which you will be able to affirm your course placement.

Course offerings for 2023-2024 will be finalized in the summer. In the interim, please feel free to peruse the courses that were offered during our current school year.

TRANSCRIPT RELEASE FORM

You will first start classes and then your teachers will tell you what you need for the year. Do not feel pressure to have any supplies when classes first begin. You can get supplies during school trips to Wal-Mart, CVS, and Staples in the first week of school.

Yes! The Donovan Center for Learning is centrally located in the David Casey Copley ’70 Library. The Donovan Center works with a wide range of students seeking academic support. If you are interested in learning more about the Donovan Center for Learning, please contact Alison Bailey, Director of the Donovan Center, at your earliest convenience to prepare effectively for the coming academic year.

Also, if a student is eligible for extended time on classroom evaluations, the appropriate documentation should be sent to Alison Bailey. For information concerning extended time on standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, ACT), please notify Gretchen McCarthy, Assistant Director of College Counseling and Canterbury’s Testing Coordinator, as soon as possible to minimize any potential delay in meeting upcoming College Board/ACT deadlines.

As a day student, you will be assigned your own locker. It is up to you to determine which books you need to bring back and forth between home and school.

Minimum System Requirements for Mac and Windows Computers
Windows: Windows 7 or newer (Windows 10 recommended)
Macintosh: MacOS X 10.10 or newer

Recommended Computers
An Apple or Windows laptop with wireless capabilities that meets the minimum system requirements. A Chromebook computer will also work and print on our network, but it will not have the capability to run as many third-party applications as a Mac or Windows computer.

Recommended Software
Although we are a GSuite for Education school, we can provide copies of Microsoft Office to our students if desired.

Acceptable Anti-Virus Software for Windows Computers
While there are others that are suitable, Canterbury School recommends AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, Symantec/Norton, McAfee, Panda, or Trend Micro.

All Canterbury buildings and dormitories are covered by WiFi.

Boarding students are not permitted to have cars on campus. In rare occasions, exceptions are made for short-term reasons. All exceptions must go through the Student Life Office.

Day students are permitted to have cars on campus and are required to register their vehicles through the Student Life Office. There are specific locations on campus where day students are required to park. Day students are not permitted to use their vehicles during the academic day.

• All Canterbury students are required to participate in a minimum of two competitive sports (or the equivalent) out of three athletic seasons during the school year, with the option to do a third or choose an on-campus alternative.

• All students must participate in a sport or afternoon activity in all three seasons.

• Athletic equivalents that substitute for a team sport in one season only during the year:
  • Media Arts
  • Robotics
  • Drama (Winter only)
  • Independent Music (must be accepted by Chair of the Music Department)
  • AP Art Portfolio

Strength Training does not count as a competitive team sport and is open to only Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Form students.

Students are required to apply for an exception to participate in an activity off campus as an alternative.

All Third Form and new Fourth Form students must participate on a team sport in the fall of their first year at Canterbury.
