Community Service

Canterbury students are dedicated to service. Canterbury believes strongly that our students should commit themselves to returning the good fortune in their lives to those in need. We seek to instill a sense of responsibility for and dedication to a lifetime of volunteer service, whether locally, nationally, or internationally.

Our community service focus is on student participation in service work. We believe the actual experience to be more meaningful and likely to encourage lifetime values. At Canterbury, community service helps to create moral leaders in a complex, secular world. And while community service is not a requirement at Canterbury, the majority of students choose to participate every year. Our faculty members are also active volunteers and enjoy working alongside the students.

The spirit of active engagement in service is alive on campus throughout the year. Students mentor at local schools, visit elders in a nearby nursing home, and rake leaves on the town green as well as becoming involved in the many opportunities listed. Canterbury’s clubs, organizations, and athletic teams support our various causes and add new ones. An end-of-the year tag sale culminates a year of hard work and raises money for the different organizations we support. Students can also take part in two exceptional experiences abroad, one in Nicaragua, where they work on projects designed to break the cycle of poverty, and another in Lourdes, France, where they assist the visiting sick in completing their pilgrimages to the Marian shrine.
