Class of 1977 Memorial Fund For Athletics

On the occasion of their 40th Reunion, the Class of 1977 launched a special fundraising initiative to memorialize deceased classmates and friends. Spear-headed by Diane (Bourdeau) Barton, Frank Bice, Sue Cooper Hodge, Judy Flayderman, Larry Fisher, and Joanna (Martiska) Woodworth, the class aims to raise a total of $40,000 to establish an endowed fund that will help current students make the most of their Canterbury experiences.

While the fund is a tribute to all members of the class who have been lost, the spirit of the award was created with Wayne Owens in mind. Wayne came to Canterbury as a sophomore and played three varsity sports each year for his three years as a Saint. He is fondly remembered as a great leader and team player with an abundance of school spirit! Wayne was a man who entered Canterbury with very little but gave his class and entire School community so much in kindness, energy and laughter.

This fund is for the underdog, the diamond in the rough, and a team player. Just as Wayne used athletics to realize his full potential at Canterbury, the Class of 1977 Memorial Fund for Athletics will support future generations of students who wish to make their mark at Canterbury (and beyond) through participation in sports. The fund –the first of its kind at Canterbury to provide endowed support for athletics – will assist current Canterbury students who, because of financial hardship, are unable to purchase athletic gear needed to compete on teams or who may not be able to afford the cost of a spring break training trip, as examples.

Please join your Class of 1977 classmates in a spirit of philanthropy that will enable Canterbury to fulfill its mission of educating young people who will change lives and make a real difference in the world. There may be no better way to honor the legacy of our former friends and Saints than the Class of 1977 Memorial Fund for Athletics.
