20th Annual Run for Joe

Meredith Berry-Toon

The start of October ushered in beautiful weather, and with it came the 20th Annual Run for Joe on Sunday, September 30.

The Canterbury and New Milford community gathered near the Sheehy Family Turf Field to kick off the event following morning Mass. The event has been held every year since 1998 to commemorate and celebrate the life of Lance Corporal Giuseppe "Joe" Leto, a Canterbury alumnus of the class of 1997 who died during training exercises while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

While intended to be a one-time event, the now annual Run for Joe has become a New Milford tradition, raising more than $200,000 in support of the Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to a New Milford-area Canterbury day students. Fellow classmates, family friends, faculty members, and current students walked or ran the cross country course in remembrance of Joe's legacy.
