During sit-down lunch on Tuesday, May 16, Sixth Formers Sarah Buckingham, Emily Keating, Jina Lee, and Jack Radcliffe presented the first copy of The Cantuarian, Canterbury's yearbook, to head of school Rachel E. Stone.
Then, Emily and Sarah read the dedication, revealing that this year's annual is dedicated to college counselor Gretchen McCarthy.
In addition to serving as the assistant director of college admission since 2013, Gretchen has served Canterbury as a South House dorm parent, advisor, and faculty advisor to the Kindness Club. This year, she and theology teacher Amy Omaña '86 created the Canterbury Spirit Squad.
Gretchen is the wife of history teacher and associate athletic director Paddy McCarthy. They have two boys.
In part, the text of the dedication reads, "Mrs. McCarthy devotes her life to the students with whom she works, and it is to her indomitable spirit that the Class of 2017 dedicates this issue of The Cantuarian."
The first Canterbury yearbook was published in 1934. The editor was R. Sargent Shriver '34, who became the first director of the Peace Corps in 1961 and a vice-presidential candidate in 1972.
Congratulations to the yearbook staff for producing an attractive book and to Gretchen McCarthy for receiving the dedication!
