Making Beautiful Music

Meredith Berry-Toon

Canterbury congratulates Jessica Garcia '19, whose successful All-State audition recently earned her a spot in the CMEA (Connecticut Music Educators Association) All-State Honors Choir.

Jess, along with additional top singers from Connecticut, spent a three-day weekend in late March at the CT Conference Center in Hartford, preparing music, building musical skills, and attending performances and events. The culminating event of the weekend was a combined concert of performances from the All-State choir, orchestra, band, and jazz band; Jessica even had the extraordinary opportunity to perform a solo in the closing number.

"I've been singing all my life, but I had never been part of a large-scale competition," said Jess. "It was truly breathtaking to be one of more than 200 passionate singers coming together to make beautiful music. I met people from all over the state who have the same commitment for and love of singing that I do."

National auditions are held in May and, if accepted, Jessica will spend four days in November at Walt Disney World with the most talented student musicians from around the U.S.

CMEA'S mission is to provide high-quality opportunities, supplementing the music education provided by students' home schools. Auditions/Festivals are held at the regional, state, and national levels. The top scorers in the auditions from the previous level are invited to audition at the next phase.

We're very proud of Jess's accomplishments and look forward to following her musical successes for the next two years.
