Outstanding Varsity Athletes Recognized with School and League Awards

The Canterbury community gathered on Monday, December 9 to honor the athletes who made outstanding contributions to their varsity team during this past fall season. Each varsity coach presented select members of their team with an MVP Award and Coach’s Award. 

Coach Soifersmith presented the Volleyball MVP Award to Molly Clancy ’20 and Gillian Marma ’20, and the Coach’s Award to Meg LeBlanc ’20.

Coach Lord presented the Field Hockey MVP Award to Tori Congdon ’20 and the Coach’s Award to Kasey Sarmiento ’20.

Coach Hargrove presented the Girls’ Soccer MVP Award to Bella Cotier ’20 and the Coach’s Award to CC Poli ’20.

Coach Omaña presented the Boys’ Soccer MVP Award to Andrew Kim ’20 and the C.T. Fisher ’72 Boys’ Soccer Award—for the soccer player who has made the greatest contribution to the program—to Jon Fernandes.

Coach Houghtalen presented the Boys’ Cross Country MVP Award to Jack McCluskey ’20 and the Coach’s Award to Jasper Sun ’20.

Coach Garcia-LaVigne presented the Girls’ Cross Country MVP award to Lorelai Lee Swanek ’21 and the Coach’s Award to Abby Omaña ’20. 

Director of Athletics Coach Stone presented the John Confort ’70 Football Award—for outstanding effort, team play and contribution to the program—to Justin Schneider ’70, and the Coach’s Award was presented to Nick Cappelli ’20 and Joey Ciotti ’20.

Additionally, several athletes were recognized with NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) All-League titles. 

Gillian Marma ’20 received Honorable Mention All New England for Volleyball. 

Lorelai Lee Swanek ’21 and Abby Omana ’20 were named All New England Class C for Girls’ Cross Country.

Jack McCluskey was named All New England Class C for Boys’ Cross Country.

Ludo Zanotti ’20 was named All New England Class B and Jon Fernandes ’20 was named All Western New England for Boys’ Soccer.

Lida Coco ’21 and Tori Congdon ’20 were named All New England Class C for Field Hockey, and Kasey Sarmiento ’20 and Grace LaVigne ’20 received Honorable Mention Class C.

In Football, Tyler Bartholomew ’20, Bryce Twohey ’20, and Natale Frangione ’21 were named All New England Class B and First Team All Evergreen, Jack Cassidy ’20 was named First Team All Evergreen, and Joey Ciotti ’20, Trent Chase ’20, Justin Schneider ’20, Declan Clancy ’21, and Eric Diaz ’22 received Honorable Mention Evergreen.

Our NEPSAC Class C Champion Girls’ Soccer team saw players receive several league titles. Peyton DeRouen ’21, Tori Gioiele ’22, Ella Olcese ’21, and Joy Okonye ’23 were named All New England Class C, and Joy ’23 was honored as Class C Player of the Year. Ella ’21 and Joy ’23 were also named Boston Globe – All Scholastic, and Joy ’23 was named their Player of the Year. Bella Cotier ’20 and Ali King ’22 were named All Western New England.
