The Halo Awards, sponsored by the Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, CT, honor high school students’ achievements in all aspects of theatre. Over 60 high schools from across the State of Connecticut participate annually in the Award Ceremony, held each year since 2003. Excitingly, in the 26 categories in which Canterbury was eligible, the school earned 16 nominations. The nominations ranged from Best Performance by a Lead Actress to Best Speciality Ensemble and Best Chorus, spanning both the spring musical—Sweeney Todd—and the fall performance of Peter and the Starcatcher.
Students attended the award ceremony, held at the Palace Theatre in Waterbury, where Canterbury won in four categories. Chiara Vaccaro earned Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as the Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd while Margaret Melich earned Best Comic Female Performance in a Play for her role as Betty Bumbrake in Peter and the Starcatcher, and Giorgo Caripidis Soto earned Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Classical Musical as the title role in Sweeney Todd. Impressively, Peter and the Starcatcher earned Best Acting by an Ensemble Cast—an honor that considered the entire cast and crew of the production!
Congratulations to all involved in both performances for their tremendous work!
