The Bard Takes Center Stage

The Bard Takes Center Stage

Seventeen years ago, the English Department teamed up with the Theater Department to immerse our students in Shakespeare Studies. Each year since then, the Theater Department has staged one of Shakespeare's plays, and the English Department has assigned and taught that same play in the weeks leading up to the performance.

"The decision to combine the forces of two departments has opened up many cross-curricular opportunities," says Wright Danenbarger, English Department Chair and Dean of Faculty. "The actors perform scenes in our classrooms, we take 'field trips' to Maguire Auditorium, and the tech theater crew members show us backstage and the tech booth. Since every student in the school is studying the same play in class at the same time, we have found that they teach each other outside of class, especially in the dorms at night."

This fall, the Theater Department is producing The Taming of the Shrew. The show will run for two nights, November 17 and 18, in Maguire Auditorium at 8 p.m.

The performances are open to the public.
